Temple of Heaven (Tian Tan)
Founded in the first h alf of the 15th century, the Temple of Heaven is a masterpiece in architecture and landscape design of a lavish imperial sacrificial altar which was used during the Ming Dynasty to present offerings to Heaven and pray for good harvests. |
The whole complex which spans 2, 700, 000 square meters is a dignified congregation of buildings set against pine and cypress trees and illustrates the exacting and meticulous science of Chinese cosmogony. Stand on the rectangular stones called ‘The Triple Sound Stones’ that pave the central path to the main temple and marvel at the acoustics built here. Step onto the first stone and clap and you will hear one echo. If you stand on the second stone and clap, you will hear two echoes and so forth.
Pay homage to the greatest temple for the gods that is enclosed within a long wall curved into a semi circle at the northern end to symbolize the heavens, while the other end is shaped into a square to represent earth. The Chinese used to believe that the heaven was round and earth was square.
Whisper to someone at the other end of the famous “Whispering Wall” and hear his reply. This is because the eaves of the wall and the hermetically laid bricks make wireless communication possible between two people on each end of this wall.
