Malaysia FAQS

We keep wondering when the world will wake up to Malaysia as a great Southeast Asian tourist destination. Not as well-known as its glitzier neighbors, Malaysia has almost as much to offer as Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore: great beaches and resorts, modern shopping, unique tribal cultures and fantastic displays of nature (from butterflies and sea turtles to orangutans and elephants) - with a bit less traffic. And while the country has one of Asia’s highest standards of living, prices are surprisingly low.

SNAPSHOT
Malaysia’s unique blend of cultures, primitive tribes, jungles, tropical beaches, fishing, birding, exciting bazaars, mountain climbing, orangutans, festivals batik factories, great food and resorts are its chief attractions. Malaysia will appeal most to well-traveled, somewhat adventurous travelers who have a strong interest in Asian cultures. Don’t go unless you have a high tolerance for insects, heat and humidity.

GEOSTATS
VISA INFO: Passport required of citizens of U.S., Canada, Australia, U.K. and other nations. Reconfirm visa information with carrier before departure.

HEALTH CERTIFICATES: Yellow-fever certificate required if arriving from an infected area or endemic zone. Contact health authorities for the latest information.

DOS AND DON’TS
Don’t offer to shake hands unless you know that your acquaintance is fairly Westernized. Even then, let them offer to shake first...Use only your right hand when touching food. The other hand is reserved for unclean things.Don’t bring up the topic of ethnic relations in Malaysia; it is a very sensitive subject...Do try the chicken and egg burgers in Langkawi...Don’t ride or otherwise annoy sea turtles attempting to nest at Rantau Abang beach..Do mail your postcards from the post office in the old Dutch part of Melaka - it is one of the most pleasant we ever encountered.
