KUALA LUMPUR

Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's capital and has all there is to offer for any kind of tourist. For those with time to spare from business, Kuala Lumpur is a shopper's paradise, a gourmet's delight and a culture buff's haven. Filled with shopping of great variety, quality and values while food from every description and origin tempts the palates at various corners of the city. One of the most attractive features about Kuala Lumpur is the many fascinating sights concentrated within the City center and its immediate vicinity. Among the many attractive sightseeing spots are National Monument & Mosque,

TAMAN NEGARA

Malaysia's National Park covering over 4343 sq. km was established in 1939 by the Sultans of the three states - Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. The stated purpose of Taman Negara is "to utilize the land within the park in perpetuity, for the propagation, protection and preservation of the indigenous flora and fauna...." Taman Negara offers the visitor a tropical haven

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park & Orchid Garden, King`s Palace, Merdeka Square, and Chinatown and there is more yet to be discovered by those who are adventurous enough to explore around this historic and cultivated city. The 421 m tall Kuala Lumpur Tower is the newest major landmark. This tower, one of the tallest in the world houses a revolving restaurant giving an awesome view of the whole of the city and beyond. A modern transport system LRT - Light Rail Transport is another wonder that will capture the interest of both the locals and the visitors to Kuala Lumpur.

for all types of varying interests. Most people go to Taman Negara for jungle treks, fishing and boat trips along the virgin jungle rivers where you can picnic and swim in clean water. For the adventurous, one can trek up the Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia.

PENANG ISLAND

The Island of Betel Nut has a lure that extends beyond its palm-fringed beaches. There is an interesting mixture of the ancient and modern. With its capital city George Town comprising many modern shopping complexes and fine hotels, the ancient part of Penang still carries its mark mainly because trishawmen still pedal their unique mode of transport while some crafts such as clog making continue to flourish in back alleys. Its strategic position on the northwest coast of Malaysia helped it to become the first British trading post in the Far East in 1786, and the first of the Straits Settlements with Malacca and Singapore. However, Penang has been a thriving entrepot as early as the 15th century. Over the decades it has attracted many groups - Chinese, Europeans, Arabs, Indians, Ceylonese, Japanese - as well as Malay and local groups.

KUCHING (SARAWAK)

"It is the luxurious growth of a vast hot-house, for the equatorial climate bathes Sarawak in perpetual summer. Nowhere on earth is natural vegetation more lavish" ..... Malcolm MacDonald, 1956.

Until 1841, Sarawak, as a state did not exist. The name "Sarawak" described a river which flowed

through a province under the rule of the Sultanate of Brunei. On 24th September, 1841, James Brooke, a English adventurer, was awarded the feudal title of Rajah for quelling a local rebellion and given the land around the Sarawak River as his fiefdom. Thus began the rule of the Brooke family, eventually spanning over a century. On 1st July, 1946, Sir Charles Vyner Brooke, the last of the three White Rajahs, ceded Sarawak to the British Crown. In 1963, Sarawak gained its independence through the formation of Malaysia.

The largest of Malaysia's 13 states, Sarawak covers an area of 125,000 sq. km. (48,000 sq. miles). The steep interior terrain, luxuriant with tropical rainforests, gives birth to mighty rivers which flow seaward through nipah and mangrove forest to casuarina fringed beaches. The climate is typically tropical. Warm and humid in the daytime with an average temperature of 28 C and somewhat cooler in the evenings.

KOTA KINABALU (SABAH)

"We sailed along as beautiful a coast as can be conceived; ranges of hills rising one beyond the other, some grass-covered, others till clothed in forest, with soft valleys and lovely bays and here and there patches of bright sandy beach with Kina Balu towering in majestic grandeur as a background"...... Spenser St John, 1858

Once known as British North Borneo, Sabah reassumed its former name upon independence through the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Its modern history began when the British North Borneo Company acquired land for the opening of plantations in 1881.

After World War ll, Sabah was a British colony until independence.

With a land area of 74,000 sq km, Sabah is known for its sandy white beaches, clear water, spectacular corals and beautiful mountain parks. On Mount Kinabalu (4,093 m), the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea, there are many unique plant species, including some 1,200 or so species or orchids. The climate is typically tropical, although less wet than Sarawak. The higher altitudes of mountainous regions are cooler and the temperature near the summit of Mount Kinabalu can drop to freezing.

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

Chiang Mai, on the Ping River, 700 km north of the modern Thai capital of Bangkok, is spectacularly located in a fertile, productive area of great beauty. Yet legend has it,that King Mengrai chose this spot not just because of its natural advantages, but because the signs were auspicious.

"Shortly before he made his decision in 1296 on the site of his new capital, a gathering of rare animals had been seen there - two white sambar deer, two white barking deer and a white mouse with a family of five. Chiang Mai-referred to as "The Rose of the North" is famous for its history, its culture and ancient temples. Although a traditional Thai city, the cultures of the bordering countries of Myanmar (Burma) and Laos have also greatly influence Chiang Mai's unique heritage. Local handicrafts such as silk, cotton weaving, umbrella making, silverware, wood carving, pottery and lacquerware making have turned Chiang Mai into a cottage industry capital. Chiang Mai has also preserved its indigenous heritage - with many of the hill-tribes people still living according to their ancient customs, language, and colorful dress with an abundance of silver jewelry and magnificent embroidery.
