The need for land pushed neighboring tribes into conflict and ownership of an enemyís head was the sign of a true warrior. More than 100 years ago in the north of what was to become Sarawak, Kayan tribes from the Baram area developed an interest in land beyond Mulu, some distance inland. This area was populated by Chinese farmers and native Murut people. The Kayan paddled their war canoes up the Baram river to the headwaters of the Melinau River. From there the canoes were dragged 2 miles overland to the Terikan River, a tributary of the Limbang where the Murut were settled. For many years the Kayan headhunters fought the Murut, forcing them to move slowly north. The headhuntersís trail from Melinau to Terikan developed into a well-used 4 yard wide route, laid with small logs over which the canoes were pushed. The Sarawak Government eventually brought peace to the area with the help of Iban warriors in the early 19th century. The iban settled intheir long houses in areas abandoned by the Murut. The original trail is almost completely erased by the rainforest of Gunung Mulu National Park. All that remains is a canal the Kayan dug around the Batu Rikan, where the Terikan River passes through a small cave. DAY 01 Depart Los Angeles on Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur. DAY 02 Kuala Lumpur arrival and transfer to your hotel for overnight accommodation. DAY 03 Depart Kuala Lumpur for Miri, Sarawak, transfer to your hotel for overnight accommodation. DAY 04 Transfer to Miri Airport for your short flight to Mulu. Upon arrival in Mulu, transfer to Mulu National Park HQ. Registration and then take the boardwalk through peat swamp forest to Langís Cave and Deer Cave. Go through the cave to the ìGarden of Edenî. Wait for the evening bats flight. Return to Park HQ and transfer to your hotel. DAY 05 Travel by longboat to Long Lutut. Visit Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. Picnic lunch and swim at Clearwater Spring. Jungle walk for 2 hours to the Melinau Gorge. Overnight at Park Chalet. DAY 06 Climb to the Pinnacles. Picnic lunch at view point. Return to Camp 5 for dinner and overnight. DAY 07 Walk through lowland forest following the footsteps of the old Kayan headhunting trail to the Terikan River, then by longboat down the Terikan River and Medalam rivers to Rumah Bala Lasong longhouse. Overnight at longhouse. We will bring gifts as well as food to share with the Iban tribe. DAY08 Continue downriver to Nanga Medamit, then by road to the town of Limbang. We expect to arrive at noon. Lunch and transfer to airport for departure to Kuching via transit at Miri Airport. Upon arrival in Kuching, transfer to your hotel. DAY09 Kuching city tour taking in the Kuching Museum as well as the daily bazaar. DAY10 This morning transfer to Kuching airport for your departure fligh back to Kuala Lumpur to connect with your flight back to the USA.
